Residence (Regents Canal)

On a rare trip into London I was walking along the Regents Canal from Paddington Basin to Camden Lock. Amidst the numerous grand houses that stood above the canal was this semi-organised cluster of items that signalled this was a home to someone. Something of a stark reminder of the unequal nature of humanity in one of the world's greatest cities but also an affirmation of creative thinking when making a home as comfortable as can be. Fallen willow

On a 'typical' summer's day in England it was pouring down but the light along the River Thames was nonetheless ethereal and the river itself almost completely quiet. The texture of the water's surface was shimmering with the raindrops and the milky sky above served to draw out the fresh greenery.

Villa staircase - Florence

During my stay in Florence (April 2018) the villa I stayed in was a huge old building on 4 floors, about 15km outside the city. It was so easy to get lost in it. During my explorations I stood at the foot of this staircase. Like all images, light is very much the key and the strong shadows drew me to capture this example of light and dark.

Artists at work

In April 2018 I visited Florence. I also visited the 'Galleria Dell'Accademia' to see Maichelangelo's 'David'. It was a great experience and a joy to see the iconic exhibit and many others there. Inevitably I was also there to capture street or urban images. Outside the museum I spotted a street artist and thought he could make a good subject to photograph. Then a street cleaner appeared, fastidiously brushing his way along the street and into the scene. The light created striking shadows on the museum wall, the umbrella, added detail to the street area and, of course, the subjects.

Quercus at sunset

On New Year's Eve in 2017, I was walking in the Berkshire countryside and noticed the most gorgeous light. With just minutes before the sun set and nightfall creapt into the landscape, the sun was at its most piercing. As the sun lit up the underside of the clouds I captured this picture.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

An iconic and much visited location. The challenge here was to find the right quality of light to do justice to the scene. The gorgeous late spring evening light looked just right but the water was black, with no reflected light coming up from the water. That is until a ferry came by and illuminated the water perfectly.

Oriental Poppy

Poppies are amazing plants. They are among the most decorative, evocative and yet so fleeting as flowers. This oriental poppy was the first of several to emerge on a plant sown the year before and what a stunning display!

Salvia nemerosa 'Caradonna' & Bee

In mid-spring this sumptuous perennial begins to flower and continues to do so until around the end of June. It is prolific, richly coloured and bees simply love it.

Acer palmatum 'Orange Dream'

I am passionate about plants. I love the variety of forms and textures that flowers, leaves and stems produce. They are beautiful and so often overlooked. However, when light and (sometimes) rain falls on them they look even more spectacular. These are newly formed leaves from a variety of Japanese Maple.

Aesculus hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut)

The Horse Chestnut tree is a common site in many parts of Europe and North America. In early April the leaves emerge and appear to hang as if on a wire until they eventual fan out. As the light fell on this specimen it stood out from the thickening canopy.

Woodland Panorama

I found a stretch of woodland with no apparent human tracks but several anaimal tracks. As I wandered into the area I felt like an imposter but was drawn by the almost shimmering light. This panoramic image (created by stitching several images together) best captures this verdant and highly textured scene.
